While other industries ride the economic roller coaster, the healthcare industry has continued to grow at an incredible—and steady—rate. Where does that leave you as a medical professional? In a great place for a successful career!
Jayne Myers, an account manager for First Assist — a medical staffing company in the Washington, D.C. region — couldn’t agree more.
“Although many other industries have been downsizing because of current economic conditions,” says Myers, “the demand for healthcare professionals, especially nurses, continues to increase.”
“The prospect for employment continues to look exceptionally good for skilled medical professionals.”
Do you have a place?
When it comes to exactly who is most needed in the industry, most experts agree that nurses are in extremely high-demand. According to the American Nursing Association, more than one million new nurses will be needed by the year 2010.
“Nurses (all acute care specialties) are the most in demand, high shortage personnel,” says Myers. “Many areas of the country are also experiencing shortages of radiology personnel, most notably ultrasound technologists.”
Where can you learn more?
If you are interested in exploring a profession in healthcare, information resources are endless. Myers suggests trade publications and web sites that cater to healthcare in general and specific occupations.
“Many colleges and universities offer two and four year nursing programs,” Myers suggests, ”while trade schools and occupational centers offer programs and certification for such professions as surgical technologists, radiologic technicians and medical assistants.”
How can you stand out?
So you’ve made the decision to enter the profession, but now what? Healthcare employers are looking for specific qualities in ideal employees.
“Because our employees care for patients,” explains Myers, “skill competency (measured by testing) and proper licensure and certifications are of the utmost importance.”
“Outstanding candidates exhibit flexibility and a can-do attitude.”
